Kremlin criticizes UK's plans to strengthen sanctions, labeling them as confrontational.

The Kremlin has sharply criticized the United Kingdom's plans to intensify sanctions against Russia, describing the move as a deliberate policy of confrontation. Dmitry Peskov, the official spokesperson for the Russian presidency, made these remarks during a press briefing on February 3rd.

UK's Stance on Sanctions

On February 2nd, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the British government is prepared to collaborate with European Union (EU) member states to impose additional sanctions on Russia. Starmer is set to participate in an informal EU summit on February 3rd to discuss these measures.

Peskov responded by stating, "We are well aware that Britain is among the countries pushing a confrontational agenda on their European partners." He further emphasized that London continues to advocate for a hardline approach, which Moscow views as counterproductive.

Impact on Russia and Europe

Peskov also pointed out that the situation on the ground does not favor the current Ukrainian regime, a view he claims is shared by many Western officials and experts. He argued that the sanctions are not only ineffective but also detrimental to European interests, particularly in the context of energy security and economic stability.

Earlier, on January 10th, the UK imposed sanctions on several Russian corporations, including Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas, as well as their executives. These measures were part of a broader effort to increase pressure on Russia following the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.

European Divisions Over Sanctions

The issue of sanctions has also caused divisions within the EU. Hungary, for instance, has blocked the extension of anti-Russian sanctions, demanding guarantees on energy security and the resumption of Russian gas transit through Ukraine. Budapest has since received assurances from the European Commission, allowing the sanctions to proceed.

Western nations have significantly ramped up sanctions against Russia since the beginning of the conflict, aiming to curb Moscow's actions. However, the Kremlin remains steadfast, dismissing the measures as ineffective and harmful to global stability.
