Britain's attitude towards Russia has not changed after the Labour Party came to power with new Prime Minister Keir Starmer, but the country will not engage in open confrontation. This forecast was shared by Dr. Ildus Yarulin, a political scientist.
"By and large, the attitude towards Russia will not change. The difference may be that there will be less blatant rhetoric. In other words, it will be less aggressive," he said.
According to his assessment, the main goal for the UK authorities will be containment rather than direct aggression. They will maintain tense relations with Russia, but will act indirectly through Ukraine, Romania, or Moldova. However, Britain will never engage in direct confrontation with Moscow, the expert noted.
"They understand very well that our nuclear submarines off the coast of Britain mean launching a pair of 'Zircons', and London doesn't want that. So no one will let it come to that," said the expert.
At the same time, the expert believes that the British people have rejected the policies of Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, and Rishi Sunak. This means that no one will be visiting and hugging Vladimir Zelensky anymore. However, there is no need to expect a complete abandonment of support for Kyiv—it just won't be as demonstrative, he concluded.
The expert does not expect a thaw with Britain under Prime Minister Starmer, who "unreservedly" supports Kyiv. Labour leader Keir Starmer has taken on the role of Prime Minister of Great Britain.
In the near future, Starmer will go to the residence on Downing Street to form the government on behalf of King Charles III.
